Done with week 1 of IA!
in working life, everyday u juz look forward to lunch-time and the time to knock off.. and really will TGIF. hahaha.
actly, 2 guys and I were under 1 supervisor. But the first day, we were told tt we have to split into 2 labs- drug abuse toxicology and clinical and forensic toxicology lab. We were briefed about the 3 diff proj tt we will be doing and were brought around the labs b4 we decide/ they choose which intern they want. actly i didnt have a pref but since the clinical and forensic lab supervisor prefers a female, i was kinda 'selected'.. or rather, left wif no choice. lol.
my lab is quite lively cos the ppl there tok quite loudly. hahahha. lab ppl are friendly and nice too. and most imptly, my mentor is nice and patient with me. hahaha. but nobody jio me out for lunch on the first day leh. lol. so i went with the 2 guy interns opp my lab. haha.
my lab does interesting things but the proj tt i will be doing, hmm not v interesting la. haha. my lab tests for alcohol in blood such as in drink-driving cases, toluene in blood for those working in hazardous workplaces, test for drugs in blood and urine or even liver and kidney for postmortem cases. like those who died of unnatural deaths, can test if it's drug overdose or wad. aiya sth like tt la. haha.
but my proj is to validate a LC/MS/MS machine to optimise it such tt it can be put to routine use. so basically, i'll be playing around with a machine. haha.
but i'll be handling psychoactive drugs and blood. haha. like i tweeted, i wont be seeing blood monthly, but daily. LOL.
but this past week, i helped to validate micropipette and syringes. so basically i draw water using the apparatus and weigh it to make sure the equipment measures the accurate vol of water. each vol muz measure 10 times sia and most of my readings fell outside of the accepted range. so i kept redo-ing and redo-ing. think got 400 times. =.= somemore everytime got air bubbles den muz flush it out. v irriating one. hahaha. one of the lab officer validate her own pipette until so pek chek that she threw her pipette on the table. LOL.
i prepared my own buffer solutions for LC/MS/MS too! haha. all the while in NTU, all those reagents we needed, were prepared by lab tech and we simply took it for granted. now muz prepare on our own liao. lol.
anw, i v sad cos they say my canvas shoes cannot be worn to lab. reason: canvas shoes is of cloth material den chemicals will seep thru. so i was asked to get PVC shoes. i bought tt pair of canvas shoes juz for IA leh! waste my money. zzz..
BUT! they allow skirts and dresses to be worn to lab! like WTH rite? so we are allowed to expose our legs to chemicals but cannot let chemicals seep thru canvas shoes. like tt oso cannot wear jeans wad. might as well wear plastic clothing. KNS. havent get pay need to spend money on IA necessity. somemore gals can let down long hair one. NO LOGIC LAH DEY.
ohh and got 1 lab officer v friendly to me. haha. she's like the first person to chit chat wif me in the lab. I took train wif her back once cos she lives near pioneer den she'll tell me stories about diff ppl in the lab and wad to do and wad not to do. when i told her my shoes cannot wear, she found a pair of crocs (yes they all wear crocs in lab) left behind by a previous staff and cleaned it for me to wear. so sweet rite.. den she asked me to join her and another lab officer for lunch one day. yay, i finally got 1 fren in lab now. haha.
though i dread waking up at 6+, having to squeeze on bus and trains, i really learnt quite alot though it's only week 1 of IA. more things to come, more things to learn! =)
P.S: alot of good food near my working place! haha. Chinatown and tiong bahru food centre got super nice food and nearby got yummy pastries and snacks. Hello fats! lol.
walk wif me ;
